READ BEFORE PLAYING:
This unique game asks players to control two characters at the same time. To do this within THE RETROVERSE, I recommend remapping Controller 1 and Controller 2 in the following ways.
CONTROLLER 1
UP – W
LEFT – A
DOWN – S
RIGHT – D
SELECT – F
START – ENTER
CONTROLLER 2
UP – ARROW KEY UP
LEFT – ARROW KEY LEFT
DOWN – ARROW KEY DOWN
RIGHT – ARROW KEY RIGHT
SELECT – CTRL
START – ENTER
You can also choose whatever key works best for SELECT on each controller. And if you happen to have two USB NES controllers, you can play the game as intended after carefully remapping the controllers to work with sideways NES controllers.
Overview
Crater Song is a short, single-player co-op adventure puzzle game for the 8-bit NES based within the sci-fi fantasy world of Orebody.
In this unique NES game, players hold controllers 1 AND 2 sideways, like Wii-motes, and control two characters simultaneously, the twins Arco and Menuett. Crater Song is inspired by the game Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.
NOTE: To make things easier to play within The Retroverse, I’ve modified the game’s controls so ARCO can be controlled using WASD (and whatever key feels best for SELECT to the player) and MENUETT can be controlled using the ARROW KEYS (and whatever key feels best for SELECT to the player).
Ideally, players would play the game using two NES or NES-style controllers held sideways like wiimotes. If you have this ability, either via emulation or on actual hardware, you should go download the OG_Hardware version of the game on its ITCH PAGE.
Story
On the planet Orebody, the nomadic Melodic tribe communicates only in song.
Every few generations, a baby is born to the tribe with cursed harmonics, a poisoned frequency that calls out to the mysterious extradimensional threat known as the Nox. This generation, the twins Arco and Menuett were born with the curse.
Having attracted the Nox throng to their tribe’s doorstep, the twins are cast out.
Even as they are hunted by eldritch horrors from beyond the stars, Arco and Menuett must journey to a faraway sacred crater with an ancient, pulsing meteorite at its center. It is said that the space rock’s pulses will lift their harmonic curse and allow the twins to once again rejoin their people in song.
